FLOODS MOVE OUT- MOSQUITOS MOVE IN
DES MOINES, Iowa -- The number of mosquitoes swarming Iowa is growing by the day, experts said Friday.
"Anywhere there's standing water, really, there's going to be, often there will be prime habitat for mosquitoes to develop," said Lyric Bartholomay, Iowa State University medical entomologist. She studies mosquitoes for a living.
More mosquitoes are coming to an arm or leg near you; in fact they're already here, he said.
"People are noticing it and we're seeing it in the information that we bring in through our mosquito surveillance program," said Bartholomay.
Researchers said they worried about all the standing water in back yards, on farms, in forests and in fields.
In Polk County, researchers compare the mosquito population from last year to the population this year. This year, researchers said there are seven times more mosquitoes.
Iowa State monitors mosquito populations throughout Central Iowa from a research center on campus. Researchers said that Iowans should expect to see them anywhere that's seen flooding.
County and city governments are already reacting to the problem and they only expect it to get worse as the summer goes on.
In Des Moines, residents can call a special hot line to request that city workers spray your neighborhood between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Crews spray mostly at night.
"We can quantify it and also anecdotally we know that the mosquitoes are really bad," Bartholomay said .
State health officials advise Iowans to use repellent, wear protective clothing and get rid of standing water, even a little bit in flowerpot saucers can harbor mosquito eggs.
Some mosquitoes can carry diseases, such as the West Nile virus, but researchers said those diseases don't often show up in great numbers until later in the summer.
THIS STORY FROM CNN FROM MAY 15TH, 2008:
PLYMOUTH, Mass. -- She's just 3 years old and she's dealing with a disease with a name bigger than she is. A little Plymouth, Mass., toddler who wants only to be identified as Allie is battling Eastern equine encephalitis, or Triple E, and it's debilitating.
While her family tries to raise funds to get her treatment, health officials are hoping her story will raise awareness as mosquito season begins.
Allie's story grabbed the publics attention when she was only an infant. She was infected with the virus by a mosquito when she was only 3 months old and she was not immediately diagnosed. The bite changed her life forever.
"She has a hard time controlling her muscles and she gets frustrated that she can't. It lets us know that her body's not, her mind's not letting her body do what it needs to do," her mother Tina said.
Triple E caused severe brain damage. Allie can't speak and there's little she can do on her own. With constant therapy, however, she has improved. She's off her feeding tube and is finally seizure free.
"She's just a beautiful, wonderful little girl who has such potential that there's nothing we won't try for her," her father, Tait, said.
Now the family will go all the way to China, where stem cell treatment is legal and may provide some promise for Allie.
"The stem cells are from the umbilical cords of healthy babies. They're what normally would be thrown away as medical waste that are amazingly helpful in many cases," Tina said.
The treatment remains experimental. PHONE #:
